Ich würde mal testen, ob das Local Dimming auch dann nicht funktioniert, wenn Du einen Film von einer externe Quelle abspielst über Blu-ray Player / Box / Stick.

Yup, dimming works fine with my Xbox that's the only external source I have currently. Only built-in apps with 8.1 files have issues, even on max dimming setting it dims about 50%. But it's only noticeable at night. The blacks on this TV are so good actually that during daylight can't really tell, even without dimming. I guess the 8.1 decoding pipeline does some weird stuff here, who knows.

Yesterday I discovered that JustPlayer doesn't have the stutter that Kodi has, interesting. I'll try sideloading some nightly builds, and fiddle with it a little more. I guess I'll figure it out eventually after wasting enough time 😀

    EDIT (after further investigation):
NovaPlayer seems to play DoVi content correctly, including local dimming and smoothness. After turning on "Android frame timing (experimental)" the stutter is gone. It seems Nova uses Android's MediaCodec API directly, while Kodi uses its own internal ffmpeg-based video decoding pipeline. Now I'm not an expert on this but looks like the HDR metadata get confused somewhere along the way. Too bad I'm not a developer; this is really fascinating.

te36 Well, I didn't expect such issues with DV either, that's why I'm simply sharing my experience to help others. As you correctly pointed out it's good to research before buying, thus others might find my post useful; see no logical conflict there.

    City Cobra:
my apologies, I was referring to internal media playback via Kodi/VLC etc. The exact model is Bravia 7 K65XR70PAEP, no external box or stick. It does play 8.1 profile files indeed, just the stutter and dimming is the issue.

To be fair though, streaming services work perfect and that's probably what Sony focuses on. 8.1 is mostly for "archived" blu-rays, mkvs etc.. and I guess they don't put as much effort in 8.1 playback, for obvious reasons.

Apologies in advance for flunking my German class.

As this is a Bravia related thread, I'd like to point out that Doby Vision support on the Bravia 7 is near terrible - only profile working properly is 5. Profile 7 is unsupported and 8.1 (which is popular) is almost unwatchable due to stutter and frame drops. The only DoVi profile that actually plays smooth is 5.

Also I noticed local dimming doesn't work with 8.1 DoVi, probably due to incorrect metadata handling by the Bravia. The black levels are slightly elevated resulting in screen not dimming properly. I'll try to isolate and narrow down the parameters of when and why this happens but so far it looks 8.1 profile support is messed up big time.
