Can Kodi run as a headless media server on RasPi?

Hello everyone,,
I have a standard raspberry Pi 3B that in currently using as a PiHole DNS server. I have Kodi running on the Pi so when the GUI / Frontend is running, I can browse and watch media on my PS4. However, if movies download movies at forum like to use it as a headless server. I've tried Kodi --standalone but it still loads the GUI.
Anyone know how I can make it run as a system service that won't take the extra overhead of the frontend? It's currently loading to CLI instead of Xserver.
